#10 - The Blue-Eyed Son

I'd meant to post this last night, and was thrown by John Prine's passing.  But, I think Mr. Prine would agree that unlike cars, roads and buildings, the world can't have too many songs.  So, in this time of magnified reflection and gratitude, I toss this brand new one out to the ether, with a salute. I imagine harmonies and soaring pedal steel on the chorus.

The Blue-Eyed Son

We say remember when,
we go to bed early now,
our hair is getting thin,
we got a furrowed brow,

we watch our cholesterol,
the kids at the counters all
call me ma'am.

It hasn't been easy,
had our share of breakdowns,
grew up like oak trees,
busted some walls down,

we caught and we fumbled
through patience and pennies,
he's picked and I've shoveled,
dug up and we buried,

and if we could go back,
if I could go back,

I would marry the blue-eyed son
I would do all that I have done
if I must question how my youth was spent
I would marry him again

Maybe we'd be famous,
if we hadn't had babies,
I coulda been Gillian,
he coulda been Jerry,

but hold hands with me,
crying and sweet smiles,
the love of a family,
taught by a small child,

and if we were twenty,
if he would have me,

I would marry the blue-eyed son
I would do all that I have done
if I had my choice of men,
I would marry him again

if the mountains bowed
and rivers flowed backwards,
if the book brought us back
to the first chapter

I would go and..
I would go and...

I would marry the blue-eyed son
I would do all that I have done
and if I must question how my youth was spent
I would marry him again.

Looking at those looseleaf pages in more detail, it is interesting to see the process implicit in them. I was just looking for a Rita Hosking CD, turns out it was three inches from Jerry Garcia in one direction (solo, with The Wheel), and from Gillian Welch in another direction. Streams. :0)
